Hawkwind's Huw on Cancer Mission

Press release from Cherry Red Records and the Killing Cancer charity.

He’s a rock legend. His vocals and guitar work with Hawkwind, Widow Maker, Leo Sayer, The Pretty Things and Sci-Fi writer Michael Moorcock, are part of music history.

In Christmas 2001 while Huw was a nationwide tour with Hawkwind he contracted Legionnaires Disease. His wife Marion believed it was the end of his musical career, but slowly his health improved and in 2008 Huw was approached to record an album of the best songs Huw had written.

Huw didn’t see the point and instead he and wife Marion wrote a series of new tracks for the album to be titled “Hard Graft”. The album will be released in the Spring of 2010, but before that, one of the tracks is to be released and be featured in a global cancer awareness campaign from the KILLING Cancer charity, promoting Photodynamic Therapy as a new way of destroying cancer. The track - ‘Photodynamic Therapy’ - will be the campaign anthem. It was written following Huw and Marion’s personal life experiences with cancer.

To raise awareness of the campaign, a competition is being launched for UK university and college students to create an animation for the track. Already 20 have signed up. The competition launches in September and finishes on 1st March 2010. The winning animation will be put on a free DVD dedicated to KILLING Cancer’s work to be released with the new album.

The full length track “PDT – Photodynamic Therapy”is being released by Cherry Red Records as a global digital download on the net on Monday 19th October 2009.
